Joseph Caldwell was the firstpresident of the University of North Carolina where he was also a professor ofmathematics. The collection includes scattered papers, chiefly relating toCaldwell's student days at the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University)and his administrative work at the University of North Carolina. Also included are adeed for land in Chapel Hill, N.C., and letters to his brother, Samuel H. Caldwellof Palmyra, N.Y., regarding a visit. Volumes include sermons, 1830-1831, and studentnotes on Caldwell's new system of geometry, 1806. Some items arephotostats.
